“The Maine Principals’ Association builds partnerships that provide a network of resources, exemplars of leadership and a culture of collaboration for the benefit of all school community members.” What is the Maine Principals' Association? The Maine Principals' Association is a private, educational, nonprofit corporation with voluntary membership that is comprised of two distinct divisions: Division of Professional Activities Active membership in this division is open to elementary, middle/junior high and high school principals, assistant principals, technical education center directors, assistant directors and other administrators who function primarily as building principals or assistant principals. Associate membership is open to former administrators, graduate students enrolled in administrative certification programs, and other individuals interested in school administration. The Professional Division has over 800 members. Division of Interscholastic Activities Public and private high schools statewide are eligible for membership in the MPA. These schools come together to promote, organize, and regulate interscholastic activities in the state of Maine. The MPA currently sponsors invitational championship competition in 19 different interscholastic activities for the young men and 15 different interscholastics activities for young women in Maine's high schools. All public high schools and a number of private schools are MPA members; they currently total 151. How Does the MPA Financially Support of These Events? The MPA receives money from tournament activities, institutional dues, and individual professional dues. The moneys received from tournament activities help defray the costs of activities that don't bring in enough revenue to offset their expenses. For example, the income from the state basketball tournament will be used to fund non-income-producing students' activities. Of the twenty-four activities sponsored by the MPA, only one shows a profit, fourteen have income but not enough to cover expenses, and nine have no income at all. A Legacy of Leadership Although it is a relatively young organization, the Maine Principals' Association boasts a proud heritage of leadership and service within the state's educational community. The MPA was chartered in 1992 as the result of a merger between the Maine Secondary School Principals' Association, which was incorporated in 1951, and the Maine Elementary Principals' Association, which was incorporated in 1975. The forerunner of the MSSPA was the State Principals' Association, founded in 1927. Internal Organization The Maine Principals' Association has four elected officers: a president, president-elect, coordinator for the National Association of Secondary School Principals, and state representative for the National Association of Elementary School Principals. An executive director, who is appointed, serves as secretary and treasurer. Each division of the MPA has a Management Committee to manage its business affairs.
